KL Expat Malaysia had heard so much about Bowen Therapy KLCC, we sent one of our employees for a session! She tells us in her own words what it was really like on the receiving end of Bowen Therapy and Nicola, a qualified Bowen therapist. We also investigated further to find out more about Bowen Therapy. Here is just a flavour of what we found.
The Bowen Technique is a remedial, hands-on therapy that is applied using very gentle pressure. The practitioner uses thumbs and fingers on precise points of the body to perform Bowen’s unique sets of rolling-type moves which stimulate the muscles and soft tissue of the body.
Bowen is a holistic remedial body technique that works on the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body. Bowen therapy can be used to treat musculoskeletal or related neurological problems including acute sports injuries and chronic or organic conditions.
Bowenwork® is a system of touch that initiates a series of responses through stimulation of the nervous, musculoskeletal, fascial and energetic systems of the human body. Practitioners perform sequences of small stimulations, called “moves”, on specific points on the body, interspersed with rest periods. Bowen helps reduce inflammation by working on the lymphatic system.
Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982) began developing his technique in the 1950s in Geelong, Australia. He became interested in ways to alleviate human suffering and began to notice that certain moves on the body had particular effects.

I met Nicola recently, originally from UK, a qualified Bowen therapist through a mutual friend who had also experienced her holistic massage techniques. I was curious and sceptical, and had no idea what was Bowen therapy and what it was all about. I thought it might be similar to Aromatherapy, Shiatsu or Acupuncture. Well, I was wrong, it was none of those.
I have had sessions with countless outlets offering similar services and I have to say that Nicola, is one of the most patient and understanding therapists I have met. She asked me just a few questions (past history, like whether I have had an operation, which area, etc) to understand more, and identify which point(s) that needs more attention before the massage.
I had a c-section previously, where I had one of my ovaries removed. The scar of the bikini line was well healed, even though after 30 years, I can still feel the knots on the both sides deep down into my tissues. Nicola expertly relieved the knots, without giving what I thought might be a painful massage to do so. In fact, I didn’t realise that my back pain was connected and related to the past surgery.
Last year, I had a dental infection, which left my jaw swollen and it didn’t subside well. I don’t know how Nicola does it, but she managed to loosen up the point, I can see that the swell has subsided enormously and now have my pretty jaw back (slightly vain!)
The experience for me was awesome. I do not believe in no pain no gain, but this time there was no pain and considerable gain! It was gentle and relaxing. Actually, experience tells me that I might well have been in pain the following morning, but no! After the session I was in bed before 8:30pm and got up around 7am as usual. I was surprised, I had no pain in my back or neck!
After the session finished (30 minutes to an hour, dependent upon treatment required) she advised me whether I need to return for any follow up sessions or not, and which exercise or food I should take as well.
Others might be sceptical and curious as I was. Experience it for yourself and you will be pleasantly surprised, I was! I am looking forward to my next visit and follow up sessions.
