In celebration of their 5th anniversary and recent rebranding from Scuba Mike’s, Big Ocean Dive invited new and existing customers to a launch party on the 14th of March, which was held from 2pm to 6pm in their shop at Plaza Damas, Kuala Lumpur.

Stepping into the shop, we were greeted by the friendly staff and sounds of cheerful conversation. We joined the families of divers, who shared fun stories of their diving experiences around the world. Laughter abounded as party-goers mingled around and took photos with the Instagrammable photo frame. Children joined in the interactive games prepared by the staff, which introduced them to the awe-inducing underwater world of marine wildlife.

The party was also joined by owner Mike’s photogenic poodles, Copper and Coco, whose cute antics made them one of the centre of attention among the younger visitors.

After helping ourselves to the food and drinks prepared by the staff, we were brought on a quick tour around the newly expanded retail area. From the expanded selection of fins, octopus regulators and BCDs, to wetsuits and children’s scuba masks, Big Ocean Dive is currently offering three times more diving gear than before.

In the midst of the party, there was a buzz of excitement as owner Mike revealed the new name, logo and merchandise to the community. Cheering over a pint of Mark’s homemade beer, he explained that the rebranding was an effort to show the team’s love and concern for the ocean. Making marine preservation a part of their company mission was a bold move that transitions Scuba Mike’s from just a scuba diving company to Big Ocean Dive.

“Over the years, we have witnessed the deterioration of coral reefs and sea life. This has become a serious environmental concern that has inspired us, as ocean lovers, to take action. Big Ocean Dive’s new mission is to save the coral reefs, starting from home,” said Mike.

Mike adds that despite the name change from Scuba Mike’s, Big Ocean Dive’s close-knitted team remains the same. Mike, Tim, Theresa and company are still the same family-friendly, personable and caring divers who are determined to make a bigger impact on the people around the world. Comparing their movement to a drop of water in the ocean, they believe that even the smallest efforts will produce a ripple that makes a world of difference.

While the retail shop is closed due to Malaysia’s Movement Control Order (MCO), Big Ocean Dive is still actively operating online. Those who are interested in taking their PADI Open Water Course can still do so at the comfort of their homes via Big Ocean Dive’s e-learning platform. The e-course includes virtual sessions with their professional instructors via Skype. In addition to that, the company invites you to become part of their movement by offering online freediving courses, Nitrox courses, ecology courses and coral ecology courses.
