We were delighted to accept when the owners of Cor Blimey British Fish & Chips invited us to review their outlet in Sri Hartamas. They also have another 2 outlets in Subang Jaya and Damansara Uptown. All 3 of their outlets follow exactly the same theme and menu. Sri Hartamas is situated just 10 KM west of KLCC right next to Mont Kiara, a large residential area popular with expats. So no surprise that the restaurants and cuisine in the area cater to the expatriate community as well as locals. We shot a short video which you can see below of the surrounding area outside.
For those of you who are not familiar with British euphemisms, buzz words or phrases “Cor Blimey” is an old saying which is typically used when a person is in shock, surprised or astounded by something or someone. As far as we are concerned and after you have finished reading this article, we are sure you will also agree this establishment is definitely aptly named “Cor Blimey!”
Cor Blimey British Fish & Chips have a very informative, well designed website where you can find out all about their history, values, concept and of course their menu packed full of truly authentic Great British food!
We had a good chat with Adam Hanrahan, the founder. Adam was born and raised in the UK in the English county of Hampshire and so is no stranger to British fish and chip shops and restaurants which are of course ever popular and in abundance throughout the whole of the UK and have been for many decades.
Thanks to his Malaysian Mum, Adam still has roots in Malaysia and so wanted to bring authentic British fish and chips to his second home and share his passion for British food with local Malaysians and expats right here in Malaysia. For that reason, all their dishes are authentically British, made-from-scratch, fresh, tasty and contain no pork and no alcohol. Cor Blimey British Fish & Chips first opened its doors back in 2016.
As a British expat living in Malaysia I can reliably tell you that it’s not only their food that is authentic. The interior of Cor Blimey British Fish & Chips is also themed on a typical UK fish and chip shop or restaurant, quite small but cosy, air conditioned, with a crisp, extremely clean ambience and feel to it.
Light coloured furnishings, bright white lighting and wall decor that all lend themselves to this well known and well loved theme. British pop music from all eras plays softly at low volume in the background. Once you have entered the building it would be easy to mistakenly feel like you are now in the UK!
Everything that is served in Cor Blimey British Fish & Chips is made to order, in house, including all their sauces such as cranberry and tartar sauce to name just a couple. However, there is just a handful of exceptions to that rule which are the Heinz bottled sauces and malt vinegar, some of you might know that these are all absolutely essential requirements for a truly authentic British fish and chip shop! You will also notice later on in our photos and video that all the food is served with the Union Jack placed on top of the food on a cocktail stick!
Our Dining Experience
There were just 3 of us dining today and we arrived for dinner around 6pm. Having heard so many good reports about Cor Blimey we really wanted to put them to the test! So even though there were only 3 of us we ordered 10 main dishes and 3 desserts, and if I am honest we did end up taking some food away but it was well worth it so that we can show case their delicious food! I would say that Cor Blimey is slightly more expensive than the likes of Fish & Co and other similar chain outlets but with Cor Blimey, freshness and authenticity is guaranteed!
You can find all the Cor Blimey menus here:
You will see on all of their menus that you can tailor many of the main dishes to suit yourself by choosing your side dishes, type of sauces, types of fish or pies, choose between creamy mashed potato or triple cooked chunky chips and your choice of vegetables. Important to tell you that their chunky chips are freshly made in house, they are not frozen chips that have been simply deep fried and the creamy mashed potato also made from real potato in house.
First out was a starter of Brussels Chili Sprouts With Cranberry Sauce served piping hot and consisted of slightly spicy brussel sprouts deep fried in batter with a separate helping of home made cranberry sauce served on the side.
Then another starter of Curry Cauliflower Popcorn With Chip Shop Curry Sauce served hot and consists of perfectly cooked, slightly crispy cauliflower deep fried in batter and served with chip shop curry sauce. The curry sauce is exactly as I remember it in the UK and reminded me of my days in high school when I used to sometimes have curry and chips from the local fish and chip shop!
Next out was a large sharing platter served on a wooden platter for 2-3 persons called the “Ocean Catch” Seafood Sharing Board. A mix of fresh seafood consisting of calamari rings, curry perch popcorn, fish fingers, fish cakes, mussels in batter, tiger prawn scampi all served with a helping of thousand island and tartar sauces and topped with a piece of fresh lemon for squeezing and pleasing!
Then came another huge sharing platter, easily enough for 4 people sharing, again served on a wooden platter called the Family Feast. This jaw dropping feast consists of 4 different types of fish, haddock, Atlantic cod, perch and dory deep fried in different flavour batters all perched on a mountain of triple cooked chunky chips hidden underneath! Also served with sides of creamy mashed potato, rice, baked beans in tomato sauce, coleslaw, tartar sauce and chip shop style mushy peas.
Next out was a main dish of Classic Cod & Chips With Minted Mushy Peas. This Atlantic cod deep fried in batter was resting on a portion of triple cooked chunky chips and served on the side was a generous portion of minted mushy peas, tartar sauce and a fresh slice of lemon.
The next dish was Chicken & Apple Sausage In Batter With Triple Cooked Chunky Chips which was more of a side order or starter. The chicken and apple sausage wrapped in really crispy batter was simply delicious! All served hot with chips and a separate side of coleslaw.
Next out was another main course of Pan Seared Halibut With Creamy Mash & Mixed Sauteed Vegetables With Cream Herb Sauce. This perfectly cooked pan seared halibut came cooked to perfection, so soft and tender that it just fell apart with a nudge of the fork, resting on a bed of creamy mashed potato. The mixed vegetables and cream herb sauce were served separately on the side.
Then came another main course dish of Beef Sausage With Creamy Mash & Onion Gravy. 2 large beef sausages resting on a bed of creamy mashed potato and topped with onions. A separate helping of peas and onion gravy on the side. For me, what made this dish was the onion gravy, clearly home made, piping hot with plenty of onion visible and absolutely full of flavour!
Next up was what I had been waiting for all evening and it didn’t disappoint! The Chicken & Mushroom Pie With Creamy Mash & Onion Gravy. The pie was served hot with mashed potato, coleslaw and again, their awesome onion gravy! The pie was just like I remember in the UK, freshly baked crispy pastry absolutely packed with chicken and mushroom filling. Very often in Malaysia the pies that you buy can be quite stingy with their fillings, but not in this case!
Then out came another main course, and yes, another pie! The Beef Rendang Pie With Creamy Mash & Onion Gravy. This time the pie was served with mushy peas instead of coleslaw. Also delicious, but for me personally, the chicken and mushroom pie would win every time!
We had 3 desserts in total the first was Apple Berry Crumble With Vanilla Custard. Crumble desserts of any flavour actually originated in the UK back in the 1940’s so this was a good test of authenticity for Cor Blimey, and they passed with flying colours!
We had 2 crumble desserts, the second was Rhubarb Ginger Crumble With Vanilla Custard. This flavour of crumble dessert in the UK is very popular but rhubarb is an acquired taste and so wasn’t such a big hit with my Malaysian wife who preferred the apple berry crumble. Although both were delicious and authentic I actually preferred the rhubarb crumble.
Finally, the Deep Fried Mars Bar With Vanilla Ice Cream. Another mouth watering dessert and a great way to end a deliciously fantastic Great British feast, and a feast it most certainly was!
As I mentioned earlier we had heard so much about these 3 outlets of Cor Blimey British Fish & Chips and I am so glad I went to try it for the first time myself. Only now I can reliably tell you myself that all the nice rumours and recommendations we have read and heard on the grape vine are definitely true!
Well done and a big thank you to Cor Blimey British Fish & Chips we will definitely be back. You are definitely worthy of the name…. Cor Blimey!
