Malaysia is a popular destination for expatriates due to its affordable housing, quality healthcare and reasonable cost of living. Expatriate families who relocate to Malaysia also have a variety of international schools to choose from. There are now over 140 international schools in Malaysia where a majority of them are concentrated in the Klang Valley, Johor and Penang. Originally catered to expatriate children only, international schools now accept both expatriate and local children.

There are several types of international schools that parents can find in Malaysia. There are established international schools which have been operating for more than 30 years; schools built by mega property developers and schools which are an extension of higher education groups. There are also a number of British boarding schools and mission schools in Malaysia. In addition, many local private schools now offer international curricula.

As there are many international schools available, it is important for parents to be familiar with the international school scene in Malaysia and shortlist schools based on their needs and requirements. Some of the factors to consider are location, history and accreditation, teacher credentials, class size, curriculum offered, facilities and extracurricular activities. Besides that, parents are encouraged to find out all the fees that are charged to make sure that the school is within their budget. Parents can gather the information they need from school websites, Open Days and international school fairs.

Since 2012, Mint Communications have been connecting parents and their children with international schools through the Private & International School Fairs. The fairs have been an avenue for parents to speak to international school representatives in a convenient location. These fairs have now become a regular biannual feature for parents in the Klang Valley. The fairs are also held once a year in Johor and Penang.
