The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) continues to stretch its versatility and demonstrates its brilliant musicianship when it celebrates the music of renowned British progressive rock band Pink Floyd on Friday, 31 March 2017 and Saturday, 1 April 2017 at 8.30 pm at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC.
Themed Symphonic Pink Floyd, these showcases will continue to witness the MPO stepping out-of- the-box and merging rock and classical elements, giving the audience the music richness and a whole different feel whilst capturing the spirit of the band.
Prior to this, the MPO has paid a similar-themed tributes to rock groups U2 (2016), Queen (2015) and Led Zeppelin (2014), and in 2013, the MPO amazed its audience with the MPO Rocks concert, performing local rock hits and collaborating with singer Ella and guitarist Man Kidal, much to press acclaim.
Pink Floyd’s popular songs were immortalized on a symphonic level in the 1995 album Us and Them: Symphonic Pink Floyd, arranged by British producer Jeremy ‘Jaz’ Coleman.
It peaked at number one on the Billboard Magazine Top Classical Crossover Albums chart and went on to become part of the repertoire of many European orchestras.
The band’s 11th album entitled The Wall, released in 1979, was inducted at number 87 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, conceptualized as a rock opera album, the album spawned a ‘live’ action/animated film Pink Floyd – The Wall in 1982.
These tribute concerts will witness the debut of conductor Michael Woods who has combined traditional orchestral music with modern classics from film, theatre, jazz and dance which appeal to wide-ranging audiences. He has appeared with the Australian Pops Orchestra,Beethoven Consort, the Martinu and Australian Philharmonics, and Bucharest Sinfonia in Europe.
Recordings have included the four symphonies of Schumann with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. He has also conducted major choral works, and last year, two Symphonic Pink Floyd concerts in Melbourne.
Fans of Pink Floyd and classical crossover music would be able to listen to familiar elements of the music but laced with an orchestral enhancement in these concerts.
Among the timeless hits to be performed are Time, Brain Damage, Comfortably Numb, Breathe in the Air, Money and The Great Gig in the Sky, among others.
Do not miss the tribute concerts, one of the unmissable highlights of the 2016/17 season!
