PETALING JAYA: Who knew that a restaurant in the middle of Hoboken, New Jersey, in north-eastern United States, would cultivate a love for Malaysia’s two staple dishes, satay and nasi lemak, in a celebrity chef.

That is what popular TV host and café decorator Buddy Valastro shared of his hometown where he has a baking facility near the restaurant called Satay Malaysian Cuisine.

Valastro, on his maiden visit to Malaysia, said he is a regular at the restaurant and his favourites are Kajang chicken satay and nasi lemak, The New Straits Times Online reported.

“I’m excited to discover what they taste like in their home country. Of course, I’m prepared not to compare the Malaysian food in New Jersey and here.

“I’m excited to be here to explore the cultures and to sample the local cuisines,” he was quoted as saying at the Starhill Culinary Studio in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, to promote the eighth season of his popular TV show Cake Boss.

Valastro, 39, shared how he had taken over the family business, Carlo’s Bakery 22 years ago, when his father passed away.

Season eight of Cake Boss will premiere on TLC (Astro channel 707) on Nov 9, at 9pm.

He is due to make a public appearance today at 7.30pm at Sunway Pyramid in Petaling Jaya, before leaving for Philippines on Thursday.
